Help answer the question about washing machines

Why the american washing machines do not clean?
I've been living in the US for 2 years now and I have a big problem with the cleaning. I changed the old washing machine, I bought a new one and still the same results! The clothes are dirty!I have used all the programs and all the detergents available in the market! I never had a problem like this with the European washing machines. Any suggestions?

Most of the name brands are good. Look for sales, even in the 'scratch & dent' sections – sometimes there is a scratch where it is not even visible, but they can't sell as 'perfect'.

I have Whirlpool.

We've been pretty unhappy with them the last few years, too! I would love to buy one that is more water efficient and has no agitator (either front or top load) but I read about nothing but problems.

But it is possible. My mom achieved the ultimate – strangers stopping her to ask how she gets her whites so white!

You might want to consider if you have very hard water, if you are using warm enough water, and if you are setting the water level high enough. One other thought is that the HUGE American machines are resulting in you washing less frequently (stains set up) or combining more different colors and leaving your laundry dingy from color bleed.

The link below has some advice that is specific to the hard water in New Mexico, but the advice is too well-written not to share.

Either that, or it is our clay soils (stain!), mustard (stains!) and Starbuck's mocha (stain!) providing sources of stain you didn't have in your daily life in Europe.

As for me, I sort carefully, and use detergent (All Small unscented) measured out per the instructions. I don't think more will help. I use Clorox 2 for most spot treating, and add it to all but my darkest loads. For whites, I let them wash with detergent and Clorox 2 for 5 to 10 minutes, then a quart of warm water with 1 1/4 cup of bleach, and reset the machine to run another 10 minutes. Some swear by multiple rinses, I don't like wasting that much water.

I use very little fabric softener. For most loads I fill the dispenser with white vinegar. It won't leave residue like fabric softeners.

you quite often see them on ebay if you want one. Ariel gel is ok but to get whites realy white you need to use a powder detergent, I won’t be buying it again, I will stick to Daz powder for whites and Daz liquid for colours.

It's hard to say. They usually have a HE on the front label. All HE means is that it doesn't suds so much which could be solved by just using less detergent (they recommend too much anyway) . What you could do is go to your local supermarket, write down the brands and their manufacturers of the detergents that you like the quality of and look up their website to see if they have any HE versions of their detergent.

The spin on that top loader sounded like the US Hotpoint I had from GE. However, mine was from 1996, and the lint filter on the agitator was eliminated by then. As for detergents, I didn’t think there was detergent in gels. All there is in the US is powder (not big anymore, but still around in limited brands) & liquid.

Yeah, it is actually amazing when you look in and see the clothes washing, they are merely just "soaked" with water not sloshing around in gallons of it. And yes, as another user said…very little detergent is needed.
For instance, when you wash your new babies' clothes, you will only need to put a couple tablespoons of Dreft (assuming that is what you use :) in for a very large load.
My favorite feature is you can barely hear them running, even during the spin cycle. So, laundry during babies' nap time is a good option. One more thing is that the Kenmore brands have a feature called "Sensor Dry" and it knows when all the clothes are completely dry. So there is no need to scorch the crap outa them.
I think they are a really good investment, although I have not seen much of a difference on my energy/water bills. But the tax incentive was nice…ask about that when you buy them!

Not all items one wishes to wash has stains on them.
Hot water cleans better than cold.
When washing whites, hot water and bleach remove stains.
Cloth diaper should be washed in hot water to sterilize them.
Many people prefer to wash their clothes in warm water, which you can not do with out first mixing cold water with hot.

that’s the good thing about these classic top loaders: fast cycle times, quick cleaning power. my nan once had one of these from the 80’s, but sold it for a front loading hotpoint ultima wm73. and regretted doing so

I’m on my second 2nd hand 9605 since the early 90’s. The gearbox of the 1st one broke, I kept it for parts and bought another. I have replaced various parts and it keeps on going. Unfortunately it is now on it’s last legs. I did a repair to the sprung carbon water seal at the end of the shaft casing as the metal was breaking up and this was causing it to leak. That’s now fixed, But the friction drum stop ring has now got oil on it and it moves slightly in the wash/rinse cycle making a noise.
