Now that’s a nostalgic sound, had the very same drive in a 386SX machine long, long ago. Considering finding it just to hear that sound in person again, I miss all the noises computers used to make on booting.

See if it shows up in Disk Management

Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management.

Look under Disk drives or removable storage. It might even be under USB controllers.

If that doesnt work try SeaTools for Windows.

SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any other non-Seagate disc drive.

SeaTools for Windows tests USB, 1394, ATA (PATA/IDE), SATA and SCSI drives. It installs onto your system. SeaTools for Windows is completely data safe.

Hi,

I would say Yes, if you do not plan to leave the old one in.
The new hard disk are low current consumption.
By the way remember that this type of Compaq uses a propetary power supply.
It means no other type will fit it nor to an other motherboard.

Best regards,

E.T.

No, this can be very dangerous. USB drives can overheat and can pose a risk of your computer spontaneously catching on fire. You should unplug the drive as quickly as possible after using it at all times.
